  Seeking goodness in challenging times

In her Advent reflection, Sister Mary Kay Brooks, a member of SSND Central Pacific Province provincial council, contemplates how to respond with faith and see the goodness in others during an era of global strife and suffering. From mass shootings to war, she grapples with the question, “How can we be so cruel to each other?” Yet like Mary and Joseph facing uncertainty and rejection, Sister Mary Kay chooses to believe in the infinite goodness within all people. She finds hope in stories of heroism emerging from tragedy and looks for opportunities in her daily life to offer small acts of kindness. As we enter the Christmas season, Sister Mary Kay calls us to see with eyes of goodness, respond with courage, and trust that God’s dreams are unfolding even in troubled times. She encourages us to be a healing presence to all we encounter, just as so many unknown people brought aid and comfort to the Holy Family. May the goodness within each of us be a light in the darkness.

  Earth-friendly Christmas

Sister Kathy Schmittgens shares a reflection of ways to show love through sustainable giving. The Christmas shopping season offers a chance to be mindful of consumption and a chance to live into the SSND Laudato Si’ Year 2 Action Plan. With a little creativity, giving meaningful gifts can also care for our common home. Gift-giving can still warm hearts while reducing waste when gifts are chosen intentionally and considering quality over quantity.
