Live the Legacy

Sister Joan Andert in front of RosatiIn 1911, the Archdiocese of St. Louis opened two free learning centers for young women, staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

In 1912, these women religious revolutionized Catholic education in  St. Louis by joining the two high schools and working together to create Rosati-Kain High School. Through the cooperation and the charisms of the two women’s congregation, women’s Catholic secondary education in the Archdiocese of St. Louis was redefined.

Today, this archdiocesan college preparatory school for young women serves more than 400 students from 66 zip codes and boasts a 100 percent college acceptance rate.

Throughout 2012, several events celebrated the school’s centennial and launched the first capital campaign, “Build the Dream … Live the Legacy.” The campaign goal is $6.8 million which will make it possible to expand the campus by constructing a 24,416 square foot, three-story building.  The new building will house new science labs, a library and learning resource center, and virtual classrooms.

“For 100 years the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the Sisters of St. Joseph have formed women of leadership, service and faith in the heart of the City of St. Louis,” said Sister Joan Andert, SSND, a longtime principal at the school and current president. “It is exciting to enter the second century of this mission with lay men and women who are committed to continuing this vital work.”

Since 1911, more than 150 School Sisters have served at the high school, located in the Central West End in St. Louis, near the Cathedral Basilica. 116 graduates have entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

As Rosati-Kain enters its second century, the staff remains committed to educating young women in the Catholic tradition for charity, virtue, knowledge and humility.
