We Walk for Life – Solidarity with Migrants

We Walk for LifeSince the mid-1990s, it is estimated that more than 6,000 men, women and children have lost their lives crossing the U.S./Mexico border. School Sisters of Notre Dame Christine Garcia and Judy Bourg joined 50 other participants in a seven-day, 75-mile walk to give witness to the human rights crisis at the border between the United States and Mexico.

The 10th annual Migrant Trail: We Walk for Life began May 27 and was a collaborative effort of community groups and individuals from both sides of the border to give public witness and walk in solidarity with our migrant brothers and sisters. We Walk for LifeTheir route from Sásabe, Sonora, Mexico to Tucson, Arizona followed the area of the Sonoran desert known as the Devil’s Highway.

Sister Judy Bourg explained, “It is because of our resolve to remember and grieve those who have perished that we chose to participate in our Migrant Trail of Tears to stand in solidarity with the men, women and children who paid the ultimate price for seeking a better life for their families.”

We Walk for LifeWhat can you do to be in solidarity with those who have traveled this path – to help raise awareness and advocate for change?

  • Urge Congress to pass compassionate, comprehensive immigration reform.
  • Get to know the border issues (and our southern neighbors) better.
  • Support efforts that get at the root causes of the border crisis – economic opportunity, human dignity and worker’s rights, corporate greed, government corruption…
  • Pray.
  • All of the above, and urge others to do the same.
