Experience Together

Telling Stories by Quilting

Since 1976, quilting has become popular again. Quilting is experiencing a renewal, offering an opportunity for people to create, to come together, to share life. Some quilts are treated as art, hanging on walls and displayed in cabinets. And quilts are sometimes used as a remembrance of friends, a political forum and a fund raising opportunity.

Women Hanging by a Thread is a quilt auction benefitting women and children struggling with poverty, violence, homelessness or illiteracy. Proceeds from the auction will be used in the School Sisters of Notre Dame ministries with women and children in rural and inner city areas in the United States.

Here is a sampling of quilts included in the auction:

LA122 - Country LoveLA122 – Country Love

LA104 - Riding the Rails

 LA104 – Riding the Rails

51 x 59
Donated by Linda Hanson, Prior Lake, MN and Sandy Giese, Coon Rapids, MN
Machine appliqued, machine pieced and machine quilted.  Debra Henninger's book "Hobo Quilts" is included with the quilt. The book contains interviews with some of the hobos who rode the trains in pursuit of work and food during the 1880's to 1940's. This book caught my eye and inspired me to make this quilt because my husband remembers living near a railroad track in Wells, MN and hobos coming to the back door of their house asking for a bite to eat. His mother always made them sandwiches which they ate on the back steps. There are more than 55 hobo "secret language" blocks with pattern and explanation for each sign in the book, a great history lesson. The quilt is made in beige, tan, rust, brown and black fabrics. The backing is a tan print.
