Experience Together

Learning and Serving

The Minnesota Valley Action Council (MVAC) Youth Development Program provides 16-21 years old basic employment skills and businesses with diversity awareness and additional workers. Jana Larson, Food Service Director on Our Lady of Good Counsel campus, coordinates this summer program. Four youth in 2012 and six in 2013 worked in food service, nursing, MVAC Youth 2013environmental services, yard work and activities. Jana believes this program helps youth develop into better employees; it also helps the staff interact with young people and those of other cultures. “It is exciting to see the girls and the staff building relationships as they improve their skills in training, mentoring, while learning,” comments Jana.

Nimo and Hani Ali, participants in 2013 shared with Jana: “Leadership isn’t a skill; it’s a talent. We appreciate you always give your best and inspire us to do the same. We’re glad to work with you. Thank you.” Conversations among the young women and the sisters create mutual learning opportunities.  Safia Aden, Kawthar Mohamud and Sumaya Hassan remarked “The Hill was like a second family to us. Thank you for your help and support.”

In the fall of 2013, MVAC presented the School Sisters of Notre Dame a certificate of recognition for their role in mentoring youth.

During the school year, Loyola Catholic School students volunteer about one-half hour each week through their Christian Education Class. This year 16 students are helping in various areas of the campus. Jana likes “to see the change in the kids, and how comfortable they become with the sisters.”

Who do you teach? What have you passed onto another?
