Global Partners Builds Relationships

Return on Investment was the title of the paper Marquette University students did after their recent service learning trip to Guatemala. The paper researched the benefits of a potable water project. Marquette Students in GuatemalaWhat the students did not mention is the deeper benefit of broadening a person’s world vision and forming a compassionate heart.

Global Partners, Running Waters (GPRW) builds relationships through collaboration on water, food and health projects in Latin America. Here are some of these relationships:

• Dianne Henke wanted to give back locally and globally during Jubilee year 2000. Dianne travelled with Sister Jan to Guatemala through GATE (Global Awareness through Experience) and decided that water was most important for people to have life. Dianne helped begin Global Partners: Running Waters.

• Sister Marie Andre Miszewski, SSND, invited Sister Jan to her South Milwaukee parish. The parish chose to form a relationship of Faith and Friendship with a parish in Guatemala. Once a month the two parishes pray for one another.

• Deacon Randy Clement from Prairieville, La., travelled with Sister Jan to El Salvador. He shared his experiences with his youth group, Rain Drops for Hopewho are now involved raising awareness and funds.

• Teddy Orgeron started his own project of selling raindrops for $1. This year 8-year-old Teddy continued his project in more schools, churches, grocery stores and with the Knights of Columbus. He hopes to raise $5,000. Sister Mary Beth Schraml, SSND, at Loyola Catholic in Mankato, and April Hostuttler from Eastlake Elementary in Chatanooga, Tenn., followed Teddy’s raindrop theme with their students.

• Annie Reifsnyder wrote her graduate paper on Global Partners and now volunteers for GPRW keeping up its website, Facebook and Twitter.

Since GPRW’s incorporation in 2003, 127,045 people have benefitted from water, food and health projects in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Peru and Haiti.
