Committed to Service:

School Sisters of Notre Dame Volunteer Program

"Love gives everything gladly, everything again and again, daily.”
~Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger, Letter 1, March 16, 1822

In August 2013 the School Sisters of Notre Dame will launch an 11 month volunteer program in Milwaukee, Wis.  Sister Marcie Solms, Coordinator of this full time service program, hopes to welcome four women, 21 years of age or older, who will experience sustainable living within a community setting.  The volunteers will have time to deepen their spirituality through prayer, reflection, spiritual mentoring and retreats.  They will be encouraged to process their experience through the lens of social justice.

SSND Volunteer ProgramThe four women will serve at one of five placement sites:  Notre Dame Middle School or Primary School, TYME OUT youth retreat center, Milwaukee Achiever Literacy program or Mount Mary College.

Two college age women were part of a two week summer pilot program in June 2012.  They served at MORE Multicultural School for Empowerment and lived at Notre Dame Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Melea, reflecting on the gifts and challenges at MORE, shared, “Working with people who speak another language is always challenging, but people’s good hearts make you forget about all of the frustrations.”

Commenting on her service experience, Steph remarked, “It was easy to gain the respect and understanding of both students and staff.   I would go back in a  heartbeat.”

Would you like to volunteer for more than a week? For 11 months as part of a full time SSND Volunteer Program?
