Call, Commitment, Competence

Blessed Theresa, gifted educator and foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, spoke these words to women becoming teachers:  “A well-educated teacher more easily accepts persons where they are and helps them become more encouraging than one who is inadequately educated; good will does not supply for lack of competence.”  It is the competent teacher, the competent leader who welcomes and honors each person, each student in who they are.

Mount Mary University cultivates commitment to competence as it nurtures becoming leaders who are grounded in the liberal arts and career preparation. Here women become leaders with integrity, who think critically and creatively.  Here women develop and integrate competence with a leadership attitude and a capacity to transfer strengths and skills to any task at hand.

Each academic year begins with a call to the entire Mount Mary community to live and to personally deepen Blessed Theresa’s educational vision.  In a Commissioning Ceremony all new staff and faculty are called to live the values woven into the fabric and heart of Mount Mary’s mission, a mission which provides an environment for the development of the whole person.

Today generations of Mount Mary educators, alumnae and students animate Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger’s educational vision and values through example, challenge, encouragement, and, yes, their competence.

On May 9, Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger’s feast, we celebrate that we are entrusted with her educational vision.
