Sister receives recognition

Sister Cordula Wekenborg shows off a plastic mat she made for the homeless.

Sister Cordula Wekenborg won the second prize of $500 from the Pioneer Network in recognition of her mats for the homeless project. This is the Third Annual Community Commitment Award sponsored by Pioneer Network. This award recognizes members of a long-term care community for their volunteer service to help enhance their communities.

In 2013, the sisters at Sancta Maria in Ripa in St. Louis learned how to crochet plastic bags and turn them into sleeping mats. The mats were then donated to the homeless. Still to this day, the mats are being created at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton, Missouri, by Sister Cordula. She said, “It is a great joy to create these mats using different plastic bags, which make beautiful patterns. This truly is reusing and giving back.”

The prize money went toward the materials needed to continue the mats for the homeless project.
