Featured Speaker:
Mary Emma Ackels Karam is a partner in the Healthcare section of Jackson Walker L.L.P. She has practiced law for more than 30 years, where her professional accomplishments are only matched by her commitment to others. Her practical advice and strategic thinking have served not only her clients, but anyone who seeks her counsel.
Giving of both her time and expertise, Mary Emma has continued the legacy of service to the community and profession handed down to her by her father, the late Lawrence Edward Ackels, Sr., an attorney for more than 50 years who started the mentor program at the Dallas Bar Association. She devotes at least ten percent of her time practicing law to pro bono matters and commits additional time to service to the community. Among her passions is children’s health. For many years she has supported the local children’s hospital, providing counsel on business matters and assisting in developing indigent care programs. Among Mary Emma’s accolades for service are being named a Pro Bono Champion by the American Health Lawyers Association and receiving a State Bar of Texas Certificate of Merit for her work in the community.
Her support and passion for her clients’ mission is also evident in her billable work and includes an uncompromising commitment to achieving her clients’ goals while effectively managing their legal costs. Regarded as an expert in healthcare/managed care, she served a term as outside counsel to the Texas Attorney General’s office and advises employers on the contracts that make up their employee health benefit offerings. As one of the top producers in a nearly 400 attorney firm, she oversees and directs the firm’s business development and marketing initiatives. Whether it is health care, managed care or as an outside general counsel, Mary Emma’s dedication to her clients and the community truly differentiates her practice.
